March 2006 Newsletter
First,
we wanted to let you know that because
of your support, we had a record breaking
month in February. We had 121,570 people
accessing the site over 3,470,448 times--AMAZING!
On February 13th and Valentine's Day,
we had a total of 23,656 visits from people
who accessed our website 1,169,756 times!
Thanks to all who sent Ecards from our
galleries on Valentine's Day, and thanks
to all who are spreading the word about
our website and our services. Here are

We have broken a record for our Support
For Lesbians Coming Out online group,
and we now have 416 members! This group
has members from all over the world including
women from New Zealand, England, Australia,
Ireland, Iran, and the Philippines! We
are providing a service for women worldwide,
and one of our members recently wrote
this note of appreciation:
"I
can hardly believe it has only been
a week. It feels like you all have been
supporting me much longer than that!
Amazing. Nothing major in my life has
changed and yet, everything has changed,
because you are there. In the Catholic
church we talk about the "communion
of saints" (those who have gone
before us into glory and are pulling
for us). Well, here, right here, is
for me a more tangible communion. A
communion of women on the way to wholeness,
to embracing who they are and to loving
others out of a place of peace-filled
integrity. Not that we have arrived
yet, but we press on... I have been
so inspired (and blessed!) in the past
week I have to stop saying Spirit is
not responding to my prayers. She just
did. Thank you all for living out loud
here in this group. Thank you for welcoming
me in."

group are looking for love, and several

members got into a discussion on the pros
and cons of online dating. In response
to this, we all put our heads together

John
Damien's Last Ride:
Jockey Turned Steward Battled Homophobia
in Horse Racing
With a passionate love of horses, John
Damien came up through the ranks as a
teen, from mucking stalls to exercise
boy, then graduating to jockey for big
US and Canadian stables, and finally becoming
an official for the Ontario Jockey Club,
which directly administers racing.
In 1975, as Damien was about to start
issuing licenses for the new racing season,
he was suddenly summoned to a meeting
at the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and
Commercial Relations, the branch of government
that oversees horse racing in the province.
Damien found himself facing two ministers,
and was flabbergasted to learn that the
Ontario Racing Commission and the Jockey
Club were refusing to reappoint him as
steward. It was a bolt from the blue,
but he instinctively knew why.
"Is it because I'm a homosexual?"
he asked.
"Yes," they said. They went
on to lecture him loftily on how he was
vulnerable to blackmail -- they couldn't
have a steward being squeezed. They offered
him parting compensation of $1700 and
a letter of recommendation to get a job
elsewhere, if only he would resign quietly.
