Coping
with the world as a lesbian
The hard knocks
Being lesbian can be challenging sometimes, but we do have
it way better than many in our past. Acceptance of lesbians
in society has come a long way in the last twenty years,
but it still has miles to go before we are treated equally
with other tax-paying citizens of the USA. When you are
young it is even harder. Employers sometimes use your energy
to benefit themselves, and this can result in lousy pay
and possibly low self-esteem. The only thing I know to do
is to always be the best person you can be. Keep your dreams
firmly in your mind, pick your battles wisely, but don’t
put up with too much crap.
Things I’ve learned as a lesbian so far
The following pages contain mottos I’ve used during
my time on earth. As with the rest of the commentary in
this book, these are my opinions stemming from some hard
lessons I’ve chosen to improve who I am. They may or
may not help you in dealing with life as a lesbian, but
they might give you a good start in finding your own path.
Everyone is born with gifts. It doesn’t matter what
that gift might be, it is yours alone. It is up to you to
utilize it and make it into something successful in your
life. Whether it’s being a great cook, mom, or musician,
don’t let your gift go to waste. If you don’t
know what your gift is, do things you like until you figure
it out. Take art, music, or writing classes; learn how to
use a computer; train your dog how to shake or your cat
how to fetch; draw huge love letters in the sand on a beach;
sit by a lake and watch the clouds. Remember your childhood
dreams of what you wanted to be when you grew up, and see
if they still make you smile. Somewhere in your life is
the clue of who you are and what you are meant to become,
so be a great detective and find out what it is.
Love the planet.
Look at nature with new eyes. After all, the earth is our
mother–the one who covers us with beautiful skies and
nighttime galaxies. Without her, our bodies would only be
stardust floating in the universe. She’s way older
than we are, so respect your elder.
There’s a lot of pollution going on right now, and
millions of acres of rain forests are being destroyed, which
cuts the oxygen and kills thousands of plant and animal
species we may never see again. There’s a hole in the
earth’s aura, the ozone layer, and huge gaping cavities
under her skin from our bloodletting of oil and explosions
of nuclear testing. All this abuse could end in the earth
eventually retaliating, so do what you can. Doing something
good for the earth is doing something good for yourself.
Recycle everything possible, don’t litter, and send
lots of love and energy her way by enjoying the natural
beauty. Love your life here. It’s just a breath in
the range of infinity.
