Counseling
from a therapists point of view
By Katherine E. Wunder, Licensed Professional Counselor
Introduction
Since many people are unfamiliar with counseling, I have
prepared this chapter to help you know what to expect if
you choose to work with a counselor or therapist. Included
in this chapter are facts on what both the American Psychiatric
Association and the American Psychological Association term
lesbians and gay men, and information from research Ive
done regarding lesbians and gay mens counseling
issues.
What do the mental health associations say about lesbians?
It has been estimated that one in ten individuals is gay
or lesbian. That means that out of one million people, at
least 100,000 are gay. Other sources say two in ten is a
more accurate depiction of our numbers. Whatever percentage
is correct, it shows that there are millions of gay people
who are making contributions to societies around the world.
In 1973, the American Psychiatric Association declared that
homosexuality was no longer considered a mental illness,
and in 1975 the American Psychological Association followed
suit.
Research concerning twins has shown there may be a genetic
component, but not in all cases, and studies of the brain
have shown some slight differences between gay and straight
men. There is still no conclusive evidence on what causes
sexual orientation. More and more it is thought to have
a genetic component, and the fact remains that there have
been gay people throughout history.
Your options for counseling
You may go to a private therapist or a community mental
health center. There are many pros and cons to both depending
upon your needs. If you work during the day, evening appointments
fit better with your schedule. Some private therapists offer
this service, but most agencies do not. If you are interested
in or have been recommended to use group therapy, community
mental health centers have this option while private therapists
may or may not run groups.
