What
is lesbian style? For privatePink, a couple of dyke designers
behind this Lesbian Calendar for 2006, the answer is illuminated
in that flash of recognition you experience when you see
dykes out there in the world--two gals walking along the
beach with a dog, embracing at the international terminal,
filling a car up with fuel, catching the train--all momentarily
queering the aesthetics of everyday spaces.
Each of the images in this candy-coloured calendar shows
hyper-stylised illustrated heroines going about the little
rituals of life: twelve fleeting snapshots of contemporary
lesbian culture for the pop consumer. The ephemeral scenes
are both warmly familiar and seductively iconic.
Designers
Keren Moran and Noa Peer describe their motivation for producing
a lesbian product: "With our base in Sydney Australia
we've had the privilege of living in a very gay tolerant--nay--friendly
city for the last few years and we've seen enough of what's
around to realize that for us girls there isn't much! It's
that and the blurry recollections of Mardi Gras or walking
down the street in Newtown that have led us to create this
calendar--the first of many future privatePINK productions."
