About Ta Neil's Art
Artist's
Statement:
I'm a writer, poetess, photographer, and multimedia
artist. I began writing poetry and songs at the age of 10
years old. Music inspired my writing.
I just graduated from Tacoma Community College 2005. I didn't
think about graphic design as a way to combine or juxtapose
poetry, and photography until midway through community college.
I've always had a deep love and passion for different modes
of creative expression. What really sparked the decision to
pursue my current mediums were the many liberal arts classes
I'd taken at TCC. I was inspired by the women of the 1400s,
and how they used art like quilting, blockprints, photography,
poetry, and film to reach others in a world which thought
them no more than property and ignorant savages.
I use my art to say what others are too afraid to say or whose
inner truth is currently over shadowed by constant pressure
to look, act, feel, and love as someone else feels they should.
My poetry has been published in the GBF(Gay Black Female Magazine.)
I was a guest speaker at University of Puget Sound, a gay
marriage forum where I read a piece entitled "What are
We Fighting For." I wrote an article for the Rainbow
Center News in Tacoma, WA "AfroQueer Theorist Explores
Perception Gap on Gay Marriage," a Photoetching "Grandpa
and Grandchildren" published in the Trillium 2004 School
Anthology.
I was awarded two scholarships from the Pride Foundation's
King and Pierce County bases to attend Evergreen State Community
College's Film Works Program. I currently live in Olympia,
WA.
